Qing Luo review

Yu Qing Luo (Wang Zi Wei) is many things. A medical genius. A single mum. And an amnesiac.

Seven years ago, she was found by the river without her memories and pregnant. After becoming one of the most famous physicians around, she sets out to learn about her true identity and find a father for her son.

One day, Qing Luo meets Prince Ye Xiu Du (Liu Xue Yi) of the Kingdom of Feng Cang who was pretending to be the unscrupulous playboy, Ye Pian Zhou.

Qing Luo and Xiu Du battle political conflicts together and their mutual attraction. But we know how this ends!

What I like about the show

This is such a sweet watch! What I call “something to watch while doing work” TV. I mean, it is rare to have a single mum as a heroine and the hero being totally okay with that. That premise alone attracted me to the show, and Qing Luo certainly delivered.

I honestly didn’t expect to like Qing Luo at first. I usually dislike shows with a bratty kids and I found their antics not cute, but annoying. Yet, I stuck on and the next thing I knew, I was near the end.

It is definitely not as intense as wuxia shows like Mysterious Lotus Casebook but there’s a lot of comfort in revelling in a simple story of a man falling in love with a single mum.

I loved how respectful Xiu Du is of the Qing Luo’s decision to prioritise her son in all things. The fact that he sincerely loves her son despite his bratty ways is another ovaries-melting moment.

Speaking of which, Liu Xue Yi is another Chinese drama actor who needs more prominent roles. He was Wuxin in The Blood Of Youth which is an ah-mazing wuxia drama and was supposed to be the lead actor in an upcoming drama but the actress was charged with tax evasion, so the show was shelved. 🙃

I wish the cast and crew of actors who were charged for tax evasion were not penalised this way 😩

But anyway, the acting was on point, despite the weak script. The plot can be very contrived and full of deus ex machinas. It can be terribly convenient how everything falls into place. Some of them can be laugh-out-loud hilarious. It is no exaggeration to say that amnesia happens a lot in this drama. Their poor brains must be rattled so much!

But as long as you focus on the fact that you’re watching to see cute moments between the trio, and not expecting Nirvana in Fire levels of plotting, you’ll be fine.

Rating: 7.5
